Founder audit

The fundraising page is a library. I needed a path.

I opened ayana.org/fundraising the way an early-stage founder does — before a lead, often before I know if I should raise. This is what I could use, where I got lost, and what Raise The Bar changes.

What already works

The page is not empty. “Raise with clarity and confidence” is the right promise, and a lot of the raw material is good. The problem is sequence.

  • The instinct to split the raise

Pre-seed angels and an institutional seed are different jobs. The page already says so, with different milestones for each.

  • A checklist you can actually tick

Eighteen steps, saved on the device. That is more useful than a PDF of advice.

  • The right names are in the building

Golden Seeds, 37 Angels, Astia, Portfolia, Chloe, Female Founders Fund, BBG, Precursor, Halogen, Cherub. Women-founder capital is not an afterthought.

  • Non-dilutive capital exists

SBIR, SBA centers, Hello Alice, Kiva, crowdfunding, and Hawaii funds are in the directory. They are just hard to find if you do not already know the category.

Where an early founder gets lost

  1. 01

I am earlier than your first card

Both stages assume an MVP and traction, then a $500K–$1M or $2M–$5M process. A founder raising $50K–$250K from people who trust her, or not raising at all, has no door.

  2. 02

I arrived with a need, not a stage

I need a SAFE, a grant, a forwardable blurb, or someone to tell me I am not ready. The page asks me to pick Pre-Seed or Seed, then offers nine equal tabs: Roadmap, Resources, Events, Networks, Cap Table, DD Checklist, Templates, Glossary, Directory.

  3. 03

Sector is a filter at the bottom

Beauty, CPG, food, and software do not raise the same way. Contribution margin is not net revenue retention. The directory can filter by sector. The journey itself does not change.

  4. 04

The directory is a library I can drown in

Dozens of funds, angels, grants, and crowdfunding platforms, all at the same visual weight. I cannot tell who writes a $25K check and who leads a seed.

  5. 05

    Nothing tells me to wait

There is no readiness gate. A famous list is available before incorporation, a narrative, or a single customer conversation.

  6. 06

    The number is a guess

The page never asks burn, months to the milestone, or a buffer for the next raise. Founders invent the ask, then defend it.

  7. 07

Ayana is not the next step

Apply, community, and pitch practice live on other pages. Inside the tools, the next click is usually an outside fund.

  8. 08

Nine tabs do not fit a phone

The sticky nav is a desktop toolbar. On a small screen it becomes a long row of equal choices, which is the same problem as the page itself.

What I still needed, that the page did not hand me

  • A way to choose an instrument: customer cash, grant, friends-and-family SAFE, revenue-based financing, angel round, priced seed.
  • Check size next to every name. A $25K angel and a seed lead are not interchangeable.
  • Sector proof inside the roadmap — margin and repeat for product brands, retention and payback for software, the payer and the regulatory step for health.
  • One forwardable blurb, one monthly update, one use-of-funds paragraph I can copy today.
  • Permission to not fundraise. The most expensive mistake at this stage is a round opened too early.

What Raise The Bar changes

  • A stage before the raise, and a first-check stage under $250K, beside pre-seed, seed, and an honest Series A gate.
  • A third door: what you need this week. The next move, the three actions, and the templates follow that, not a tab bar.
  • Sector changes the proof you owe and which capital rises to the top. Consumer inventory financing is not a SaaS seed list.
  • Six matched resources, with a reason, instead of the full directory.
  • A readiness score, a raise calculator, a target list, copy-ready notes, and the questions investors actually ask.
  • Apply, events, and community as the human close — the checklist does not replace the room.
Raise The Bar

If this goes back onto ayana.org

Keep the milestones, the women-founder networks, the glossary, and the data-room checklist. Change the front door.

  1. Add “Not raising yet” and “First checks, under $250K” before Pre-Seed and Seed.
  2. Let a founder enter by need. Stage can come second.
  3. Make sector change the roadmap, not only the directory filter.
  4. Lead with three actions. Park cap table, glossary, and the long directory behind them.
  5. Put non-dilutive capital beside angels, not under a tab the founder has to already understand.
  6. On a phone, one next step. Not nine links in a row.
  7. End the page on Apply, pitch practice, or community — Ayana is the room, not only the map.
